NEW DELHI: NHPC is set to enter Myanmar with a plan to set up two hydro-power projects. The Myanmar project would be second overseas presence for NHPC after Bhutan.
The company has signed an MoU with Myanmar’s power ministry to develop two hydro-power projects of 1200mw (Tamanthi project) and 600mw (Shwzaye project) on the Chindwin river close to the border, minister of state for power Jairam Ramesh said.
The projects are part of the Look East Policy of the government under which India would expand business ties with Myanmar, especially in the energy sector. Besides NHPC projects, Bhel would also provide its services to two other power projects in the neighbouring country.
“The Chindwin river basin has enormous hydropower potential estimated to be around 2,500mw. Besides, the basin is also of strategic importance to the country due to its proximity to several north-eastern states. The project would definitely help the country to meet its energy deficit. The projects would be kickstarted after the utility conducts a techno-economic feasibility,” Mr Ramesh said.
