The late Zambian president, Levy Mwanawasa, was not our friend. He dared to condemn the despot Robert Mugabe. Let us not honour Mwanawasa.
Instead, let us now be proud of the democratic states of China and Russia, who stood by us like good friends at the UN when we refused to impose sanctions on Mugabe and his top cronies a month ago.
The UN Security Council did not propose much: a travel ban and asset freeze on Mugabe and his cronies plus a ban on arms sales to the country. South Africa voted against the adoption of the resolution and lobbied hard until Russia and China vetoed the resolution."
