YANGON, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- A newly-built modern paper mill in Thabaung, Myanmar's southwestern Ayeyawaddy division, has gone into production, the official newspaper New Light of Myanmar reported Monday.
The 50-ton-capacity Thabaung paper mill, operated by the Myanmar Paper and Chemical Industries of the Ministry of Industry-1, will produce high-grade photo copy paper, newsprint paper and wax paper, the report said.
The 50-ton paper mill is another one added in the same Thabaungarea after a prior 200-ton pulp factory was built and opened in May 2005.
The addition of the new modern paper mill contributes to the improvement of country's status of depending such paper on import, experts said.
Myanmar plans to build more paper factories in the future -- a 60 tons' in the same area and a 500 tons' in the Ponna island in western Rakhine state, Myanmar officials said earlier.
Paper factories in Myanmar, including state and private operated ones, produced a total of 57,000 tons of paper a year against its demand of 160,000 tons, according to official statistics.
The figures also show that Myanmar imported over 80,000 tons of paper annually, including those through border points.
